Maundy Thursday 2022

This year, Holy Week is celebrated from Sunday, April 10 to the following Sunday, April 17, 2022. The week between Palm Sunday and Easter is marked by solemnity and is seen by Christians as a time of devotion to the Passion of Jesus Christ. Holy week used to go by the name of the Great Week as called by the Greek and Roman liturgical books. This is because according to them, great deeds were accomplished by God during this week. It was not until the 4th century that it was changed to Holy Week.

Maundy Thursday?

For the devout, Holy Tuesday’s significance lies in its commemoration of the Last Supper. Christians remember the tense, sensitive, and precious last moments Jesus spent with his apostles in the upper room and the last supper he shared with them.

The word used to describe this specific day “Maundy” is from the Latin word for commandment mandatum. This refers to when Jesus told his apostles that he was leaving them “a new commandment”. That commandment was that they “love one another.”

It was also on this day, during their last supper, that Jesus told the apostles that one of them was going to betray him.

More important, however, has Jesus established the new covenant that would be central to the Christian faith. It was also here that Jesus gave his other commandment to his apostles and by extension to everyone that follows the teachings of Christianity. That commandment was to remember him through holy communion.

“While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, ‘Take, eat; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will never again drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.’”

Matthew 26:26-29

Is Maundy Thursday a holiday in the Philippines?

Maundy Thursday (Huwebes Santo) is the first statutory public holiday of the week and marks the beginning of the Paschal Triduum.

One of the most important Holy Week traditions in the Philippines is the Visita Iglesia (Spanish for “church visit”, also known as the Seven Churches Visitation). Throughout the day, worshipers pray to the Stations of the Cross inside or outside the church, while at night, the faithful pay obeisance and perform supplications to the Blessed Sacrament within the Altar of Repose.
