This year, Holy Week is celebrated from Sunday, April 10 to the following Sunday, April 17, 2022. The week between Palm Sunday and Easter is marked by solemnity and is seen by Christians as a time of devotion to the Passion of Jesus Christ. Holy week used to go by the name of the Great Week as called by the Greek and Roman liturgical books. This is because according to them, great deeds were accomplished by God during this week. It was not until the 4th century that it was changed to Holy Week.
Holy Monday
For the devout, Holy Monday’s significance lies in its commemoration of the time that Jesus lamented Jerusalem’s lack of faith and drove out the merchants and people who were turning the temple into a marketplace.
“Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. ‘It is written,’ he said to them, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a ‘den of robbers.’”
The Cleansing of the Temple: Matthew 21:12-13
Is Holy Monday a holiday in the Philippines?
Holy Monday (Lunes Santo) is a regular working day in the Philippines. Therefore, most companies operate as usual during this day. However, that doesn’t stop devotees from practicing traditions that further their faith.
The religious traditions continue in Lipa Batangas during this year’s Holy Week. Catholics usually observe Visita Iglesia. where devotees visit seven churches in one day and pray two stations of the cross in each church visited or sometimes, for those who are able to, fourteen churches in one day to pray a station of the cross in each church visited. This used to be done on Maundy Thursday but that has been changed in recent years with Visita Iglesia being done on any day before Good Friday.
